Collar studs are small, functional fasteners used on dress shirts with detachable collars that were a common style in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. If you need these then you don't have a permanently attached collar. These are for shirts that have a band collar with one or two holes for attachment.
These will attach the detachable collar and keep it in place: one at the front and one at the back. Each stud had a short post with decorative or rounded ends that slipped through aligned holes in both the shirt band and the collar.
